ROMAN EMPIRE: Faustina Junior, augusta, 147-175 AD, AE sestertius (27.31g), Rome, 161-176 AD, RIC-1665, draped bust right, FAVSTINA AVGVSTA // infant twins Commodus and Antoninus seated vis-à-vis on throne, S-C across field, SAECVLI FELICIT, lightly smoothed, glossy patina with a few peripheral spots of porosity, accompanied by photocopy of the relevant plate from the original catalog, Choice VF, ex Achille Cantoni Collection, ex P. & P. Santamaria, November 29, 1920, Lot 808. Achille Cantoni (1835-1867) was an Italian patriot and volunteer fighter during the Risorgimento. He famously saved the life of Giuseppe Garibaldi and was killed in action during the Battle of Mentana. In his civilian life, he amassed a significant collection of Greek and Roman coins, which were dispersed in two separate auctions, first by Giulio Sambon in Milan in 1887, then by the firm of Pietro and Pio Santamaria in Rome in 1920.
