ROMAN EMPIRE: Julia Paula, augusta, 219-220 AD, AR denarius (2.35g), Rome, RIC-214 (Elagabalus), draped bust right with hair waved and fastened in plait, IVLIA PAVLA AVG // Elagabalus and Julia Paula standing vis-à-vis, clasping right hands, CONCORDIA, faint smoothing in obverse field, iridescent toning, Choice VF. Julia Paula was married to the new emperor Elagabalus in early 219. Their marriage was short-lived, however, as Elagabalus divorced her in 220 in order to marry the Vestal Virgin Aquilia Severa, an act considered scandalous and sacrilegious by the Roman society.
