ROMAN EMPIRE: Valentinian II, 375-392 AD, AV solidus (4.47g), Thessalonica, S-4147, RIC-4a.3, bust facing right, pearl-diademed, draped & cuirassed / Valentinian & Valens seated, holding together a globe, Victory behind with outspread wings, SMTES below, very tiny rim nick, beautiful bold strike, choice EF, R. By far the most common variety of this type is of the Trier mint, with Constantinople also relatively common. Thessalonica is one of the rare mints for this type.
