ROMAN IMPERATORIAL PERIOD: Octavian, imperator, 40-27 BC, AR denarius (3.68g), uncertain Italian mint, 32-29 BC, RIC-251, Cohen-70, diademed head of Venus right // Octavian in military attire standing facing with head left, extending right hand and holding spear in left, CAESAR - DIVI F across field, banker's mark on obverse, lightly polished with faint hairlines, toned, F-VF, ex Santo Estêvão Hoard, ex General António Luís Gomes de Moraes Sarmento Collection, ex Leu Numismatik Web Auction 34, Lot 2118. The Santo Estêvão Hoard was found in 1879 in the eponymous town on the bank of the Tâmega River in northern Portugal. Upon its discovery, a number of pieces were acquired by Gen. António Luís Gomes de Moraes Sarmento (1851-1929), a railroad engineer and numismatist. He wrote about the hoard in the journal O Universo Illustrado between 1880 and 1883 and included line drawings of the coins. In it, he also laments that the local townsfolk tore down ancient ruins near the findspot in the hopes of finding more hoards and found nothing.
