ROMAN PROVINCIAL, THRACE: Pautalia, Septimius Severus, 193-211, AE28 (14.51g), Tachev-287, Varbanov-4795, laureate head right // river god Strymon reclining left with head right, holding tree in right hand, resting left hand on urn from which water falls and flows below, two small figures below, one standing right and tilling the ground, the other half-submerged right (possibly panning for gold), small gouge on obverse, a very interesting example with a dynamic reverse design, accompanied by collector's envelope, VF, ex Thomas R. Miller Collection.

The Struma river, which flows near Pautalia (present-day Kyustendil, Bulgaria), has seen gold prospecting activities since ancient times. Its fame for mineral riches is evidenced by an extraordinary reverse design on coins issued under Julia Domna (Varbanov-4922) and Caracalla (Varbanov-5174), which features a reclining river nymph and small figures accompanied by the words APΓVPOC (silver) and XPVCOC (gold).
