ROMAN PROVINCIAL, THRACE: Pautalia, Septimius Severus, 193-211, AE29 (13.35g), Tachev-238 (plate example), Varbanov-4785, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right // satyr dancing right, raising right hand in the air, extending left hand toward nymph seated left and cross-legged on bed, very rare, light porosity and smoothing, accompanied by collector's envelope, F-VF, ex Thomas R. Miller Collection, ex Gorny & Mosch Auction 117 (2002), Lot 370. The reverse is based on a popular contemporary theme known as Invitation to Dance, which features a dancing satyr next to a seated nymph. Several of these sculptures have survived since ancient times and are now on display in various museums.
