IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
ROMAN PROVINCIAL, THRACE: Pautalia, Septimius Severus, 193-211, AE29 (14.85g), Tachev-- (cf. reverse of 164 & 165, vs. Caracalla 176), Varbanov--, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right // emperor (beardless) in military dress standing left, holding thunderbolt and long spear, being crowned by Nike standing behind him and holding palm frond, possible mule with reverse of Caracalla, light porosity, accompanied by collector's envelope, Fine, ex Thomas R. Miller Collection. While Septimius Severus is always depicted with a full beard on coins (for example, on both the obverse and reverse of Tachev-164), the figure on the reverse of this coin is oddly beardless and rather youthful. Furthermore, this reverse type with Nike is not recorded for Septimius Severus but is known for his son and co-ruler, Caracalla. As the two rulers both issued coins at Pautalia during their coregency, it is thus possible that this example was the result of an inadvertent muling.
