This issue commemorates the construction of Aqua Marcia, one of Rome's most important sources of drinking water, built under Q. Marcius Rex in 144 BC, whose statue appears above the aqueduct. This moneyer was the stepbrother of the young Gaius Octavius (later the emperor Augustus) and a member of gens Marica, which supposedly traced its lineage to Rome's legendary fourth king, Ancus Marcius.
