Includes a historical introduction, including a short early biography of John Gault (the inventor of encased postage) and the events leading up to the introduction of encased postage into everyday commerce. Then follows 31 chapters, one each for every advertising merchant, including biographical notes and a census of the surviving issues. The book ends with a look at Gault's later life, a conclusion, and a rarity and value table.
