SAFAVID: 'Abbas I, 1588-1629, AV heavy ashrafi (3.85g), Qazwin, AH1018, A-2629, type D, superb strike, probably unique, lovely About Unc, RRRR. This is the latest date known for gold coinage of 'Abbas I, and is the only type D gold piece known to us. After 1018, there was no Safavid gold coinage until 1129 under Sultan Husayn, save for a few occasional presentation pieces. Imported gold, mostly from the Ottoman Empire, Europe, and occasionally from Spanish America, served as gold coinage during that long hiatus.
