SAMANID: 'Abd al-Malik I, 954-961, AE fals (2.72g), Bukhara, AH348, A-1463 var, Zeno-130026, citing vassal Qut-tegin at bottom of obverse field, and again at center of reverse, nasr min Allah wa fath qarib ('victory from God and an imminent conquest', Qur'an 61:13) around, divided into four parts by ornate cruciform pattern, Qur'an 30:4-5 in margin, choice VF, RRR, ex Ralph A Cannito Collection. This curious piece is the only example of its type we are aware of. Though minted at the Samanid capital, it does not contain any mention of the amir, `Abd al-Malik. Instead it cites Qut-tegin on both sides, whose name otherwise only appears on the obverse of coins from Bukhara, Balkh and Tirmidh in the 340's, under both `Abd al-Malik and his father Nuh. We know from records that Qut-tegin was granted important feudal rights in Bukhara, and his daughter was one of the wives of Nuh (ONS No. 218 p.9). The purpose behind this coin remains a puzzle, as its extraordinary reverse either represents a brazen act of insubordination or a token of the amir's appreciation for his loyal service.
