SANDWIP ISLAND: Sultan Dilawar, 1617-1665, AR ¼ tanka (2.50g), ND, Mitch-LW.350 (this piece), G-CG12, choice VF, RRRR, ex Hans Mondorf Collection. Sandwip Island lies a few miles off the coast from Chittagong. Sultan Dilawar was appointed governor of the island by the Arakanese in 1617 and was ultimately captured, at the age of about 80 years, by the Mughal forces of Aurangzeb in 1665, after which he was imprisoned in Dhaka (Jahangirnagar), where he died soon afterwards; this is the only coin that is known to have been produced for the little island of Sandwip. A similar piece sold at Stephen Album Auction 19, Lot 972, for $1200.
