SASANIAN KINGDOM: Yazdigerd III, 632-651, AR drachm (4.17g), MY (Maysan), year 35 (sic), G-235, Tyler-Smith-174 (type 7/3), bold strike, EF, RRR. Yazdigerd III was assassinated during the 20th year of his reign. One suggestion is that supporters of the Sasanians, opposed to the Arab conquerors, continued to illicitly strike drachms in the name of Yazdigerd. Another theory, less likely in my opinion, is that the victorious Arabs struck a few coins with obverses of Yazdigerd rather than Khusro, whereas their contemporary regular issues are almost all in the name of Khusro, with Arabic "bism Allah" on the obverse, lacking on the proper Sasanian issues of Yazdigerd. A third possibility is that this coin mules a normal obverse die of type 7/3 (used at numerous mints YE15-20) with an obsolete MY mint reverse die from Khusro II, likely struck somewhere in the diminishing Sasanian territories before the capture of Yazdigerd during his year 20, presumably far to the east of Maysan in southern Iraq.
