SAXE-MEININGEN: Bernhard II, 1803-1863, AE 2 pfennig, 1863, KM-171, C-42, a lovely lustrous caramel red brown mint state example! PCGS graded MS63 RB, ex Joe Sedillot Collection. In 1863, Duke Bernhard II of Saxe-Meiningen died after a long, conservative reign. He was succeeded by his son, Georg II, who would later gain fame as a major patron of the arts and reformer of German theater. This transition occurred during rising tensions between Austria and Prussia over control of Germany. Georg II’s accession marked the beginning of a more culturally vibrant era for the duchy.
