SAXE-NEW WEIMAR: Wilhelm, 1641-1662, white metal medal, 1661, Koppe-353, Merseburger-3883, 22mm white medal metal for the construction of a large globe on the castle in Jena; D.G. WILHELM DUX SAX. IVL. CLIV. CTM. around bust of Duke right // IENAE DEC9 ARCIS ET ARTIS OPUS (The ornament of Jena is a work of fortress and art) and date around castle of Jena with globe on the roof, PCGS graded AU. Koppe refers to Röblitz, who held the opinion that fewer than 100 in silver of this memorial piece have been minted, which explains the extraordinary rarity. Under the mathematician and astronomer Erhard Weigel, the Duke had a large sky globe built on the castle, a precursor of modern planetariums.
