SAXE-WEIMAR-EISENACH: Karl August, 1758-1815, BI 1/24 thaler, 1799, KM-148, Cr-70, a wonderful lustrous mint state example! PCGS graded MS64, ex Joe Sedillot Collection. In 1799, Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach was under the rule of Duke Karl August, a progressive and enlightened leader who had already begun transforming the duchy into a major cultural center of Germany. That year falls within the Weimar Classical period, during which the duchy, particularly the city of Weimar, flourished intellectually and artistically. Key figures like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Johann Gottfried Herder were active at court, and Friedrich Schiller had recently joined the cultural circle. Politically, Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach remained neutral amid the growing conflicts of the French Revolutionary Wars, focusing instead on domestic reform and cultural development.
