SAXONY: Weimar Republic, AE inflation token, 1923, AFA-190, J-69, 29mm bronze "Hörnlein" medal; crouching woman in a pose of despair holding her arm over the shoulder of a nude child // 1923 / IM OKTOB. KOST: / IN SACHSEN / 1 LITER MILCH / 1 MILLIARDEN / 1 PFUND BUTTER / 40 MILLIARDEN / 1 PFD. ZUCKER / 4 MILLIARDEN within wreath of thorns, a superb mint state example! PCGS graded MS65 RB, ex Adolph Hess Nachfolger, Frankfurt am Main with original ticket. During the Weimar Republic's hyperinflation of 1923, Sachsen (Saxony) saw the creation of "Hörnlein" medals, a form of emergency currency and satirical commentary on the soaring prices, featuring images and text reflecting the extreme economic hardship. In 1871 a new numismatic publication called Autographierte Numismatische Correspondenz appeared in Frankfurt am Main. The editor was the numismatist and merchant Adolph Hess, who had opened a small coin store in Giessen the year before. The new publication served as his first printed stock list. On October 5th, Hess moved his business to Frankfurt, first to Höllgasse 6 near the Dom, and finally in 1873 to Bethmannstraße 6, where he started to hold public coin auctions.
