SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN: AE medal (14.63g), 1849, Lange-187, Bergsøe-218, 32mm bronze medal by F. Löwenstein for the Victory against the Danes at the Battle at Eckernförde; the coast of the Bay of Eckernförde with cannon batteries at left and at upper right with two cannons, and the city at center; on the bay, two Danish ships are close to the coast and the "Christian VIII" is burning and sinking, engraver's name below, in exergue // DEN TAPFEREN DEUTSCHEN KRIEGERN GEWIDMET around central legend, "ZERSTÖRUNG / D.DÄN.LINIENSCHIFFES / CHRISTIAN VIII / UND / EROBERUNG / DER FREGATTE / GEFION / ECKERNFÖRDE / 5 APRIL 1849," a lovely mint state example! PCGS graded MS63. The Battle of Eckernförde was a Danish naval assault on Schleswig. The Danes were defeated and two of their ships were lost, with the surviving crew being detained.
