SCHWARZBURG-RUDOLSTADT: Free State, AE medal, 1919, 37mm bronze medal by Oertel in Berlin for the Minister of State Freiherr von der Recke, sponsor of the Günther Foundation; bust half left // helmeted coat of arms with helmet, PCGS graded Specimen 64. Franz Ernst Wilhelm Karl Freiherr von der Recke (1854-1923) was Minister of State in Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. In 1918, the Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt abdicated in the November Revolution. Franz von der Recke resigned from his offices on November 13, 1918, but joined the new overall ministry of the Free State of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt as a civil servant. After the first state election in 1919, the government was re-formed. He did not stand again for this election on May 23, 1919 and retired on June 4, 1919. The former principality became a "Free State" in 1919 and joined the Weimar Republic as a constituent state. In 1920, it joined with other small states in the area to form the new state of Thuringia.
