SCOTLAND: James VI, 1567-1625, AR counter, ND [1579], MI-I, 129/78, 29mm, Mary Queen of Scots, MARIA D G SCOTOR REGINA FRAN DOI, crowned impaled arms of France and Scotland // VIRESCIT VVLNERE VIRTVS, hand descends from cloud to prune withered branch of a vine, PCGS graded VF30. These jetons are described in the Archaeological Journal of the Institute XV 259. The year 1579 was the eleventh of Mary's captivity; she was at that time at Sheffield in the custody of the Earl of Shrewsbury The jetons appear to be of French workmanship and they may have been a new year's gift from some of Mary's relations in foreign parts. They are doubtless identical with the counters described in the inventory taken at Chartley in August 1586. The withered branch being pruned represents Elizabeth I.
