SELEUKID KINGDOM: Antiochos IV Epiphanes, 175-164 BC, AR tetradrachm (16.27g), Antioch on the Orontes, SE167 (146/5 BC), SC-1885.1, posthumous issue, diademed head right // Zeus Nikephoros seated left, BAΣIΛEΩΣ / ANTIOΧOY / EΠIΦANOYΣ, with ZΞP (date) in exergue, excellent portrait, a lovely example of great eye appeal! EF, R. This unusual type in the name of the long-deceased Antiochos IV was issued only in Antioch in 146/5 BC. Mørkholm (NC 1960) postulates that it was struck either by Alexander Balas as a desperate attempt to win over the people of Antioch by invoking their fond memories of the late ruler, or by local magistrates during the brief interregnum between Alexander's ouster from the city and the arrival of Demetrios II.
