SELEUKID KINGDOM: Antiochos, son of Seleukos IV, 175 BC, AR tetradrachm (17.05g), Antioch on the Orontes, SC-1369b, SMA-46, struck September-October/November 175 BC, diademed head right // Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding arrow and resting hand on grounded bow, tripod to outer left, monogram in exergue, lightly toned, VF, R. After the assassination of Seleukos IV on September 3, his minister Heliodoros attempted to take power by installing the king's young son, also named Antiochos. This proved unsuccessful as Heliodoros was driven out by forces loyal to the king's brother, who then took the throne as Antiochos IV. The rarity of the coinage of the young Antiochos attests to a brief reign which lasted until he was adopted by Antiochos IV sometime between October 23 and November 20. Antiochos subsequently sequestered the boy away and eventually had him killed five years later.
