SIERRA LEONE: AR 50 cents (12.99g), 1791, KM-5, lion / handshake, love token, with initials MW ornately engraved, nick on reverse, VF, R. Province of Freedom was a British settlement founded at Granville Town for freed slaves by the Committee for the Relief of the Black Poor, many of whom were Black Loyalists who had decided or were forced to leave the United States after the American War of Independence. It was founded in 1787 and then re-established in 1791 (under St. George's Bay Company) after having been abandoned in 1789 after attacks by local tribes.
