SIERRA LEONE: Freetown Colony, AE cent, 1791, KM-1, Sierra Leone Company issue, struck in bronze at the Soho Mint in Birmingham, a wonderful proof quality example! NGC graded Proof 64 BN. The Freetown Colony (1792-1808) was the foundational period for modern Freetown, Sierra Leone, established by the Sierra Leone Company as a settlement for Nova Scotian Black Loyalists and freed American slaves, and later Jamaican Maroons. The 1791 Sierra Leone coins, commissioned by the Sierra Leone Company, were actually struck later, primarily in 1793, by Matthew Boulton's Soho Mint in England, with some proofs struck as late as 1799; the date 1791 signifies the founding of the Company, not the minting date.
