SIKH EMPIRE: AR mahmudshahi rupee (10.71g), Derajat, AH1233, KM-373, Herrli-07.01.04var, countermarked on the Khanda symbol of the Sikhs on the reverse, thus authorizing the continued circulation of a normal Durrani rupee of Derajat after the Sikh takeover of Derajat in AH1236, choice VF, RRR. The only other recorded Derajat mahmudshahi rupee with the Khanda countermark appeared in our Auction #22, Lot 946, which was dated AH1236, the year of the conquest. This piece verifies the theory that the Khanda was applied in order to keep the older mahmudshahis of Derajat in circulation, and thus prevent a critical coin shortage.
