SINKIANG: 100 red cash, year 9 (1920), Pick-S1820, SM-H126-20, XN-474, Sinkiang Provincial Government. Finance Department Treasury, S/N 1505, corner missing, PMG AU53, ex Bernd Löer Collection. The "red cash" (hong qian) currency system, was a unique monetary system established in Xinjiang by the Manchu-led Qing Dynasty starting in 1760. Unlike the brass "yellow cash" used in China proper, these local coins were cast from nearly pure copper, giving them a distinct reddish appearance. The production of "red cash" (hong qian) coinage in Xinjiang officially ended around 1911, with the closure of the last traditional mint in Ucturpan marking the end of its physical production. The issuance and circulation of banknotes and currency denominated in the "red cash" (hong qian) system officially ceased in February 1939 with the Xinjiang Commercial Bank (under the leadership of Mao Zemin) implementing a sweeping currency reform. This reform completely abolished the old local "tael-cash" based system.
