After the start of the Chinese reconquest in North Sinkiang in 1876, Kuche and Kashgar were conquered in 1877 CE. Yakub Beg died the same year and the reconquest was finalized in 1878 CE. The Chinese authorities divided Xinjiang into two parts: the south-western part, with its capital at Kashgar, wihch included the towns (and mints) at Khotan, Yarkand, and Yangi Hisar; and the notrhern part with its military headquarters at Kuche and its administrative capital (and mint) at Aksu.
