SINKIANG: Kuang Hsu, 1875-1908, AR 1/2 miscal (5 fen or fung) (1.68g), Yarkand, AH129x (1878), Y-A7.16, NS-E33a, Chinese-Uyghur type, very rare one-year type, F-VF, RR, ex Dr. Wolfgang Schuster Collection. After the Qing army reconquered northern Xinjiang in 1876, Kuche and Kashgar also fell in 1877. Yakub Beg died the same year and the reconquest was finalized in 1878 CE. The Chinese authorities divided Xinjiang into two parts: the southwestern part, with its capital at Kashgar, which included the towns (and mints) of Khotan, Yarkand, and Yangi Hisar; and the northern part with its military headquarters at Kuche and its administrative capital (and mint) at Aksu.
