SINKIANG: Yakub Beg, 1864-1877, AR tanga (mace, 1/2 miscal) (1.76g), Kashgar, AHxx93, Cr-37-1.1. A-P3090, NS-E09, uneven strike, scarce type, rebel issue, VG, S, ex Dr. Wolfgang Schuster Collection. Yakub Beg was supreme army commander in the Khoqand Khanate. Since the time of Rashid al-Din's revolt in Kucha against the Chinese in 1864 CE, he took over the uprising. Eliminating his rivals, he succeded in establishing himself at the neighboring Tarim Basin, made Kashgar (Kashi) his capital in 1865 CE, cut all ties with Khoqand, and in 1867 CE proclaimed the independent state of Kashgaria (Emirate of Kashgar) in Altishahar. The Chinese lost control over all large towns in Xinjiang and Yakub Beg's territory covered Yangi Hisar, Yarkand, Khotan, Aqsu, Kucha, Korla, Turfan, Urumqi, and Kara Sheher. Yakub Beg became a new power in Central Asia and the focus of Islamic aspirations in East Turkestan. By offering his alegiance to the Ottoman sultan and caliph "abd al-'Aziz in 1873 CE, who bestowed upon him the title of Emir, he recieved recognition and protection, as well as moral and material support. He was also recognized by the Russians and the British who each wished to maintain him in power as counter-balance to Chinese ambitions in the region. Yakub Beg died in May 1877 CE in Korla during the Chinese reconquest of the territory, which was finalized in 1878 CE.
