SOGDIANA: Anonymous, ca. 700-730, AR "mug" drachm (2.99g), Bukharkhudat type crowned bust right, Sogdian legend before / attendants flanking fire altar, which is dominated by the head of Ahura Mazda, highly stylized, with triskelion countermark, crude Extremely Fine, RR. These are often called "Mug drachms" as the first known hoard was found on Mug mountain (in Tajikistan). The name was given by one of the numismatists involved in the original group, probably Zeimal, Davidovich or Smirnova. There were ancient documents found there also. It appears these coins were minted and circulated in the territories of Samarqand and Tajikistan. Through the years three hoards have been known from Tajikistan territory, one from Samarqand area and one hoard from the City of Paykend (45 km from Bukhara), for a total of 5 hoards. These coins never circulated in Bukhara oasis however and no coins have yet been found there even though they are derived from the Bukharkhudat types. This came from a hoard of 200 drachms. Also found in this recent hoard were 40 AR Bukharhudat, 2 Sassanian AR drachm, and 15 Sassanian AR drachm with countermarks.
