SOLOMON ISLANDS: fossilized shell armlet (397.13g), Opitz p.260 (plate example), known locally as poata, 121mm x 18mm, made from the fossilized shell of the giant clam (Tridacna gigas), a lovely example of fine workmanship, worn only by chiefs and used for large purchases, EF, R, ex Charles Opitz Collection. The poata was used to buy canoes, slaves, alliances and as blood money. It was also the payment to have a man killed, with one ring of good quality worth one life.
