Morro Castle was built at the port of Havana in 1589 in response to raids on the city. The first major use of the fort was against the British in an extension of the Seven Years' War. The British set siege against the castle in June 1762. After much activity by the British mining the right bastion of the fort, Commander Luis Vicente de Velasco tried to attack the British by the sea on July 29. He was repelled by the British and the counterattack was unsuccessful. Later in the day, the British exploded the mine and were ultimately able to take command of the fort. de Velasco was wounded by the attack and evacuated to Havana, but died of his wounds on July 31.
