SPAIN: Felipe III, 1598-1621, BI diner (1.30g), Banyoles, ND (1600-05), Calicó-590, crowned bust right // civic coat-of-arms, countermarked on reverse with head of friar (in 1605), boldly struck with attractive patina, Choice XF on XF host. In 1599, Banyoles received royal permission to strike small billon coins and began to issue them the next year. However, the city had to renounce this privilege in 1605 due to the appearance of the large number of counterfeit coins. To distinguish the authentic coins from the counterfeits, the former were counterstamped with the head of a friar and allowed to circulate while the latter were destroyed.
