SPAIN: Isabel II, 1833-1868, gilt 10 escudos (8.12g), 1868 (68), as KM-636.1, contemporary imitation, with most of the plating worn off the obverse, cleaned, F-VF. These counterfeits were made from platinum, which was cheap at the time, and gold-plated. It is presumed that the platinum originated in South America and was initially imported into Spain. Circumstantial evidence points to the counterfeiting taking place in Barcelona or the surrounding region.
