SPAIN: Isabel II, 1833-1868, platinum imitation 10 escudos (8.18g), 1868 (68), as KM-636.3, contemporary imitation in platimum, interesting date in stars as 18-68 (originals were 18-73), gilt, with most of the plating worn off the obverse, EF-AU. These counterfeits were made from platinum, which was cheap at the time, and gold plated. It is presumed that the platinum originated in South America and was initially imported into Spain. Circumstantial evidence points to the counterfeiting taking place in Barcelona or the surrounding region.
