STRASSBURG: Bishopric: Karl, 1592-1607, AR 80 kreuzer (29g), 159Z, Nicol-MB 200, Korchnak-561, 35x33mm uniface klippe siege issue, three coats of arms with "15 - 9Z" flanking above and "80" below, fully struck, unmounted, plain edge, XF. After the death of the Strasbourg bishop John IV of Manderscheid, the Protestant canons elected the Protestant John Georg of Brandenburg as his successor on May 17, 1592 in the absence of the Catholic canons with the approval of the magistrate. The Catholic canons who did not participate in this election, however, decided on May 31 in favor of Cardinal Charles of Lorraine-Vaudémont. The disputes over this double election sparked a war that lasted around eight months, during which both parties plundered and burned numerous places in the diocese. In the city of Strasbourg, which was blockaded by the troops of the Catholic Lorraine Charles, one-sided emergency coins of one, half and quarter thalers were created at the beginning of 1592, on which the coat of arms of the Protestant Brandenburger Johann Georg was combined with those of the cathedral chapter and the city.
