SULAYMANID OF YEMEN: Mahmud b. Ahmad, ca. 1215-1232, AE fals (2.72g), ND, A-1099M, al-malik al-'adil // mahmud bin ahmad, both sides within diamond-in-square, Yemeni or Arabian style; unique and unpublished, crude VF. Mahmud b. Ahmad appears to have rebelled against the Ayyubids upon the death of the Yemeni Ayyubid Ayyub b. Tughtekin in 1214. It is possible that he received permission from the later Ayyubids to strike copper fulus in his name. The actual mint location is unknown. It is also possible that he had some secondary authority at or near the holy city of Makka, where his ancestors resided before about 1063.
