SUMENEP: Paku Nata Ningrat, 1812-1854, AR ½ ducaton, KM-—, Hafner-115, S1a/b, countermarked Madura star on Netherlands Utrecht AR ½ ducaton KM-115 dated 1788, VF on EF-AU host, RRR. According to Netscher and Van der Chijs, Sultan Paku Nata Ningrat installed in 1818/19 a commission for countermarking foreign silver money. This countermark is found on large silver pieces, like ducatons, Maria Theresa thalers, and milled Spanish 8 reales pieces and their fractions. This countermark is mainly found on coins dated from the second half of the 18th century. Although it is commonly attributed to the rule of Sultan Paku Nata Ningrat, this is not confirmed. Apparently unpublished on this host type.
