SWEDEN: AR medal (12.67g), ND (1873), 31mm silver medal of Swedish Reformer and Pastor Olaus Petri by Lea Ahlborn for the Royal Academy, half-length portrait in official costume to right with OLAUS PETRI ECCLES. HOLMLENS. PASTOR. around // Religio and Clio seated on rocks below sun rays breaking through clouds, lightly toned, plain edge, About Unc. Olaus Petri (Olaf Petersson) was born in Örebro in 1493 and died in Stockholm in 1552. He first studied theology in Rome and then went to Leipzig and Wittenberg as a student of Martin Luther. Back in Sweden he was a preacher at Strangas Cathedral. His Reformed sentiments were already evident here. When the Catholic Church's criticism of him became threatening, King Gustav Wasa appointed him Secretary of the Stockholm Magistrate and made the city church available to him as a mint. Together with his brother he laid the foundation for the Reformation in Sweden with Bible translations, Swedish hymn books, and "Olaus Petris Katekes."
