SWEDEN: Fredrik I, 1720-1751, AE 2 daler, 1750, KM-PM71, 190x165mm, 'plate money' recovered from the wreak of the Nicobar, truncated from corrosion but with central stamp and one corner stamp readable, Very Good, ex Hans Mondorf Collection. One of very few famous shipwrecks of the Danish East India Company, the Nicobar was outbound to India with a load of Swedish copper 'plate money'. Demonetized in 1777, these plates were being shipping to India for manufacture into Danish Indian coinage. But, the Nicobar never reached its destination: After stopping at False Bay (Valsbaai) South Africa to replenish supplies and offload sick crew, the ship left again on July 10, 1783, and ran aground in a storm that night. The wreck was rediscovered in 1987 by local fishermen, who salvaged some 3,000 copper plates. According to Tingstrom there are 1132 examples known including 1101 pieces form the Nicobar wreck of this date and denomination. Photo size reduced.
