Gustav II Adolf was killed on the battlefield of Lützen on November 6, 1632 in the Thirty Years' War. His body was returned to Sweden in 1633 to Nyköping, where it remained until the funeral monument in Stockholm was completed. His funeral finally occurred on June 22, 1634. He was accorded the title of "Gustavus Adolfus the Great", the only Swedish monarch so honored.
