SWITZERLAND: Solothurn, AE medal, 1890, Richter-1121c, Martin-645, 45mm, designed by Walther Vigier and H. Jenni, engraved by Hugues Bovy, issued for the 1890 cantonal federal shooting festival, Niklaus von Wengi standing facing in front of a cannon, placing his right hand on the muzzle and left hand over his heart, his name and the date 1533 at his feet, buildings in background // Swiss shield over six crossed rifles and Swiss flag, wreaths in background, a deftly executed example depicting of a dramatic episode in the history of Solothurn, PCGS graded Specimen 64. Niklaus von Wengi was a mayor of Solothurn in the 1530s-40s. In 1533 during an uprising by the Protestant citizens over curtailments of their liberty, von Wengi, himself a Catholic, famously stood in front of a canon as the Catholic faction was about to bombard the barricaded Protestants, thereby preventing a religious war.
