SYRIA: Islamic State, AR dirham, AH1437, denomination in center, al-dawlah al-islâmiyyah / khilâfatun 'alâ minhâji al-nabuwwah ("Islamic State / a caliphate upon the model of the Prophethood") in the margin, and "3 grams / 99.9 silver" across field // minârah dimashq al-baydâ' ("the white minaret of Damascus") and view of the mosque, date above, all within ornamental border, lustrous, a few light scratches, small scrape on obverse rim, AU-UNC The Islamic State gold dinar was the de-jure currency of the Islamic State from 2014 to 2019. It is subdivided into silver dirhams and copper fulûs, and it has its origins in the historical gold dinar. In 2016 (AH1438), one gold dinar was exchanged for 190 U.S. dollars or 91 British pounds. A series of coins divided between gold 5, 2, and 1 dinars, silver 5, 2, and 1 dirhams and copper 25, 10 and 5 fulûs were released as such. Despite the extensive promotion of the Islamic State of this coinage series, the currency only saw limited circulation in areas under their control.
