Sear, David R., Roman Coins and their Values; Volume III (2005), Spink and Son Ltd., London, 2005, 536 pages, hardcover with dust jacket. The Third Century Crisis and Recovery, A.D. 235-285 The Accession of Maximus to the Death of Carinus. This third volume continues the comprehensive revision and covers in detail the following half century, a very different period during which the Empire came perilously close to total disintegration under the pressure of foreign invasions and seemingly interminable civil war. The economy also collapsed and with it the Imperial coinage, a desperate situation which was only partially alleviated by the currency reform of Aurelian undertaken late in his reign. Opening sections include a glossary, legend abbreviations, denominations, reverse types, countermarks, mints and mintmarks, and dating, followed by a catalog with legends and descriptions, cross references, valuations in up to 3 grades of preservation, and many historical notes. A standard reference.
