TAXILA: Anonymous, 3rd/2nd century BC, AE square unit (7.45g), Pieper-1432 (this piece), 3-arch hill, obelisk or pillar left, uniface, wonderful strike, XF, R, ex Wilfried Pieper Collection. According to the consignor, the pillars of Ashoka (272-232BC) are amongst the earliest known stone sculptural remains from India and it is tempting to regard the pillar on this coin as one of them!
