TAXILA: Anonymous, 3rd/2nd century BC, AE square unit (9.81g), Pieper-1504 (this piece), facing head of a yaksha // lotus on railing, weak reverse (normal for this type), VF, RRR, ex Wilfried Pieper Collection. The yaksha is a demonic creature that dwells in the wild, a nature spirit widely worshiped in ancient India. Cunningham regarded the depicted face as that of a rakshasa, a demon opponent of Buddhism.
