THAI KINGDOMS: Lan Na, LOT of 3 AR tok chiangmai, made ca. 17th-19th century, all cast to the standard of 4 baht or 1 tamlung, weighing 68g (62mm), 61g (52mm), and 61g (50mm) respectively, the largest one counterstamped twice with the numeral 4 (Mitch-2800); all in decent VF; retail value $250, lot of 3 pieces. Chiang Mai Toks are usually found with a blackened top while the underside is yellowish-brown. This discoloration is traditionally attributed to the supposed mixing of the silver alloy with egg yolk and chicken blood. Krisadaolarn & Mihailovs, among many specialists, challenge this proposition and believe it was instead achieved by applying gold leaf to the obverse after production.
