THAI KINGDOMS: Lannathai, AR 1/4 tamlung (16.29g), ca. 17th to 19th century, Mitch-2802, Krisadaolarn-B102, 26mm, known as tok chiangmai, a particularly nice example with bold striations at the top and vibrant colors on the bottom, XF, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection. Chiang Mai Toks are usually found with a blackened top while the underside is yellowish-brown. This discoloration is traditionally attributed to the supposed mixing of the silver alloy with egg yolk and chicken blood. Krisadaolarn, among many specialists, challenges this proposition and believes it was instead achieved by applying gold leaf to the obverse after production.
