IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
THAILAND: KINGDOMS: Lan Na, AR tok chiangmai (70.81g), ca. 17th-19th century, Mitch-2800, 67 x 55mm, debased silver "oyster" tok coinage cast to the standard of one tamlung, three circular marks stamped on around the aperture on the obverse, XF, ex Dr. Dirk Löer Collection. Chiang Mai Toks are usually found with a blackened top while the underside is yellowish-brown. This discoloration is traditionally attributed to the supposed mixing of the silver alloy with egg yolk and chicken blood. Krisadaolarn & Mihailovs, among many specialists, challenge this proposition and believe it was instead achieved by applying gold leaf to the obverse after production.
