THAILAND: LOT of 95 porcelain tokens, made ca. 1760-1875 for Chinese gambling establishments in Siam, made in various colors, shapes, sizes and with different design elements, including animals, plants, human figures, etc.; most with clear details and attractive surfaces; retail value $750, lot of 95 pieces, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection. Porcelain gambling tokens were widely produced and used in Thailand prior to the advent of modern machine-struck coinage. They are usually round and show the name of the establishment in Chinese on the obverse and the character fang (= fuang) or qian (= salung) on the reverse, though there are many exceptions and variations in shape, color, decorative elements, and inscriptions. Due to the shortage of coinage, these also circulated as small change until this practice was banned by the Thai government in 1875.
